  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 1 packet active dry yeast (2 1/4 teaspoons)
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water Ensure the water is warm, not hot, to activate the yeast.
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil Can be omitted for a vegan version.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. In a bowl, mix warm water and sugar; add yeast and let it sit until frothy, about 10 minutes.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt.
  3. Add the yeast mixture and olive oil to the flour; mix until a dough forms.
  4. Knead the dough for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  6. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  7. Punch down the dough and divide it into 2 equal portions.
  8. Shape each portion into a round loaf and place on a baking sheet.
  9. Let it rise again for 30 minutes.
  10. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown.
  11. Cool on a wire rack before serving.

Notes

Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days or freeze for longer storage. To reheat, pop it in the oven for a few minutes.
