Crust and Topping
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour For best results, sift the flour.
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter (cold, cubed) Ensure the butter is cold for a flaky crust.
Apple Filling
  • 4 cups peeled and sliced apples (such as Granny Smith) Feel free to mix apple varieties.
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice Prevents apples from browning.
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar For added sweetness and moisture.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. In a large bowl, mix together flour, granulated sugar, and salt.
  3. Cut in the cold butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Press half of the mixture into the bottom of the prepared baking dish.
Filling
  1. In another bowl, combine apple slices, lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, brown sugar, and vanilla. Mix well.
  2. Spread the apple mixture over the crust.
  3. Sprinkle the remaining flour mixture over the apple layer.
Baking
  1. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until the top is golden brown.
  2. Let it cool before cutting into bars and serving.

Notes

For best results, allow the bars to cool completely for easier slicing. To elevate the dish, consider topping with vanilla ice cream or caramel sauce.
